Hi,

My name is Susan and I am moving to Ireland at the end of Oct. '04.  I would like to take a freighter if possible.  Does anyone have any info. on this?  Any information anyone has will be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Susan

Did you have any luck from the agents you contacted - that spam filter you have set up on your email account could have stopped them replying.

That's the trouble with filters - they are not very good at separating spam from genuine messages!

Off the top of my head, I'm not aware of a service that goes direct from New York to Ireland - but you will have no trouble getting to the UK of course.

If you can't get to Ireland direct, I am pretty sure that one of the shipping lines has a service connecting Liverpool to the USA - if you could get a ship that arrived in Liverpool, you are only a few hours away from Ireland by ferry - much better than arriving in the usual UK ports located in the South and East of the country.

I'm afraid I can't remember the shipping line - but an agent would know.

Let us know how you get on.

Just had a search around

The service I was thinking of departs Chester PA for Liverpool - but it's via Antwerp in Belgium on the Eastbound voyage and takes around 14-16 days

Also, this service only takes passengers from April to October - so it would be a bit of a close call for you.

By comparison, NSB have a service that links New York direct to Southampton in 7 days - so although Southampton is further from Ireland than Liverpool, the overall journey will be shorter and much cheaper.

I believe this service takes passengers all year round - any of the agents will be able to book you with NSB.

Thank you Steve.  You have been very nice and very helpful.  I am trying to secure passage to Liverpool.  I am happy with this.  We'll see what happens.
