If I do go on one of these trips I would like to travel when the weather is absolutely at its worst. I would like to leave from L.A.  and land somewhere in Europe. I noticed that some shipping lines do not offer trips during some part of the year. Is this because of bad weather and insurance?

Well, if it's rough weather you are after, the North Atlantic in winter is probably the best place in the world - so I would advise taking a flight to the East coast (USA or Canada) and depart from there.

There are not many trips departing from L.A and heading east to Europe via the Panama Canal - and even if you get one, this will take a more southerly route across the Atlantic - avoiding the worst of the weather.

I believe that NSB shipping lines have a regular service from New York to Southampton which takes passengers all year round - go to the bookings page and contact an agent for advice.

I'm not sure why some shipping lines don't take passengers in the winter - I assumed it was just because the weather could be really bad - but it's quite possible that high insurance premiums are a factor.

Thanks for the info, I think from looking at NSB and their site that they are a bit too formal for my tastes.

I am going from Long Beach to Singapore, starting in mid-Feb until early March. I was wondering if anyone had any actual experience with this voyage and had any idea about the severity and probability of bad weather in the north Pacific. Thanks!!!
