Preparing for 4 months on a freighter, I am downloading about 100 CDs to an iPod. Ordinarily, you listen to the music stored on an iPod by putting on ear-phones.  My question:  can the iPod be hooked up to the speakers in the cabin? Does anyone know whether such speakers have an auxiliary plug-in place? If they do not, then I suppose one would need an FM transmitter to achieve the same goal (cost: $40-$100)?

A similar question has to do with laptop and the TV set in the cabin.  I expect to have about 100 film titles stored on my Apple laptop.  Of course, they can be viewed on the screen, but if the TV set in the cabin has a larger screen (and superior speakers), then I would like to attach the laptop to the TV set.

Any advice on these two matters?

Hello 4 months sounds like a a round the world voyage. Congratulations.  I am sure your cabin will have a stereo with CD and tape cassete player and an auxilliary input for your ipod. Also a TV with a video and DVD players. For the last couple of years every ship we have been on have had same. The crew enjoy videos and in the officers lounge there is a book library and a collection of video tapes and DVD's. All the best.
I hope you have a good rapport with the officers you dine with and they have a good cook.

Have a wonderful voyage.  Not long after my first one to South America, I booked a second trip.  You will likely meet the nicest, hardest working people in the world.  Be sure to spend some time in the crew mess and get to know everyone.  As for your music, I recommend sitting on the bridge in the pilot's chair and jamming.  Freighter travel is loud and sometimes sooty unless you're at the bow where it is as quiet as a sailboat.  Have a great trip!!!!!
