I want to figure this thing out, but I really don't want to have to deal with an agent. Even on the net there seems to be limited info on this topic. Does anyone know of a place to start? Perhaps a listing of small time maritime companies. I really don't care where the boat is going; it's the experience that I'm looking for, North Sea container ship, African bulk carrier, or a Mideast RO/RO. For my tastes I think a bulker or a reefer is my best bet, they tend to stay in port longer. A rust bucket is fine with me, as long as I'm not going to land up in some unpronounceable port without a ride. Then again that might be just the right thing. Thanks

There is quite a lot of info on the websites of the main freighter travel agents - you can read this without actually contacting them - just do a search for "freighter travel" and it will turn up about 6-7 agents

That search will also bring up "The Internet Guide To Freighter Travel", which has a lot of useful info and links.

Most of the shipping lines will also have info on their own websites - be aware that not many shipping lines actually take passengers - the ones that do can easily be found by reading the agents sites.

I'm not sure why you wish to avoid agents - if you are serious about making a voyage, they really are the best place to start - tell them exactly what you want and they will find the voyage to match - it will save you a huge amount of time.

Going through an agent doesn't cost more than booking direct - it can sometimes even be cheaper - and remember that many shipping lines won't even take direct bookings, the only way you can get info about them is via their chosen agents.

I also prefer to book NOT through an agent. You can... I did it last time (only time) I went by freighter.....just keep on searching and write to the public relations person. I booked through the owner...it is hard to find out just who the owner is, as the ship is often renamed when it is leased through an overseas company. Many owners are in Holland, germany and around the baltic also they have their offices in strange spots like Cyprus.
