I'm looking for the name of a freighter/passenger in the 1950s that I have taken. The route I had was: Europe thru Panama Canal up along Pacific Coast to California  ports. The name was something like Daller Dyke. That's all I have. Any help would be appreciated.

Just call this grandma a freighter travel junkie.  Last voyage was aboard the Hamburgo down the west coast of South America.  Flexibility in all areas is a must.  We had to change our flight and hotel three times before finally sailing and a change in the charter made us eight days late returning to the port of departure.  You won't find harder working guys and most really appreciate having passengers.  Plan to be your own entertainment with books, movies, puzzle books, etc.  When going ashore, it's a nice gesture to ask the crew if I can bring anything back for them since they seldom leave the ship.  Ports times are generally 12-18 hours.  Hire a taxi with an English-speaking driver (negotiating a fare and time span first) or, even better, have a written list of places you want to see and/or a map with the places circled.  Make sure the port agent gives you very clear directions back to the port gate for your driver.  Freighter travel is a challenge but very much worth it.

Do you remember the vessel's flag?  American, Dutch?  Could it be the Damsterdyk of the Holland America Line?
