I would be very curious to find out how you could work on a freightor for a few years. Do you have to become a longshoreman or whatever?  or could you get hired on a really dodgey freightor say from north korea or syria or something?

i was always under the impression that it'd be cheaper to travel by freighter but it looks like its actually not....

It's not the answer you want to hear I'm afraid - you will need to join the merchant navy.

hi  smooth_talker ..

just saw your post and had to say s'thing! ..

what are your particular work skills, and experience, i am wondering ??

to assume that you can just *pick up * some work on a freighter, is , to me, a tad arrogant!

seafarers are trained professionals, no matter what their rank or position; in many countries there is very keen competition for sea going positions ..

we depend heavily on the worlds merchant fleet; they are responsible for carrying 90% of the worlds cargo!

don't kid yourself and think that you can just slip into a job on a freighter scrubbing the decks or s'thing! ..

take a passage on board a freighter ship and you will see the dedication and professionalism for yourself! ..

bruce ..
