Hallo. I've just discovered this forum. I'm trying to find out if there are any freighters that can take passengers to Sri Lanka, or perhaps South India, from the UK? I have been to Sri Lanka by air, but would love to return there by ship. So far I have found only one shipping line that calls there, and they seem to be very expensive.
Any tips from knowledgeable people?

Hi

There are a couple of services to India/Sri Lanka from the UK - you need to use the form on the bookings page to ask the agents for advice.

As a rough guide though, you are probably looking at about 25 days sailing - so fares in the region of $2300 - $2700 will be about the price quoted - whoever you go with.

If you want to save a bit of money, consider picking up a ship in the South of France or Italy - this could knock $700-$800 off the price - and it would open up more voyage options too!

If you can find an Oldendorf tramp voyage available on that route, at the time you wish to travel, you would be laughing.

At $60 per night, you could probably go from the Mediterranean to India for about $1000.
