 We have travelled recently for six weeks from mexico to japan relatively 'cheap' with Oldendorff .........now they have discontinued all passenger bookings.........what, if anyone can tell or guess, is the next best affordable option available on the market to travel around the globe?    thanks for any hint you may be able to share,   enso.

I doubt we will see anything as cheap as Oldendorff ever again - at least, not on a regular basis, with routes all over the world.

If you search around, you may find 1-2 tramp voyages for about $65-70 per day - which is slightly more expensive than Oldendorff were - but still fantastic value.

Other than that, the cheapest liner voyages start at about $100 per day - which, when you think about it, is a good deal - a half decent hotel room would cost you that.

So the way I look at it, staying on a freighter is the same as staying in a hotel - but with travel all over the world thrown in for free!

Take a look at the Rickmers Line Round-The-World Pearl String Service <http://www.rickmers-linie.de/services/index.php3>.  It is more costly than Oldendorff but is still an excellent value.  This route is all general cargo ships which gives you longer in port.  It is a long trip, 124 days, but looks like a wonderful route.

Tnx, Corky

Hi Enso and Matz

Rickmers doesn't have more papers than most other shipping companies. Try to book a vessel of the Wappen Reederei between Europe and Canada and then you will be happy with Rickmers again!

My experience with Rickmers is not bad at all, they are efficient, friendly and most comments I hear from former passengers are positive. I like them.

The fine print of Oldendorff was in now way better for the passenger than Rickmers fine print. Freighter travel can only function with the most restrictive fine print which are in favour of the shipping line. Unfortunately nowadays people run far too fast to a lawyer to get money from companies for no real damage!

Kelvin

Avatars are not allowed on this board - just my personal preference I'm afraid - if a whole lot of members started to ask for them, I may reconsider.

Also, I edited your signature - I don't allow links to any non freighter related websites in signatures - judging by the description of your web page it is about budget cruising, not freighters.

If sites are personal pages, exclusively about freighter travel, then URL's are allowed.

Until a couple years ago every freighter travel agency could issue their standard contract for Rickmers voyages. Since about two years Rickmers issues all the papers incl. the Passage contract so that all the information - especially the name of the responsible carrier - is named correctly.
