Seattle is a big seaport .... I'm sure that there must be plenty of cargo ships entering and departing from Seattle at any given time. Is it hard just to hitch an impromptu ride on a freighter without booking it ahead of time ? J.

Sorry, those days are long gone. You can't even get anywhere near a ship in port for a look. Seamen with all papers in order and who have been coming to the US for their whole careers aren't allowed to walk 100 feet to the gate without an escort when and if one can be found.
There are many merchant ships in and out of Seattle but none take passengers.
Contact a US freighter-booking agent to see if a west coast run will let you book from some US port.
